SA 8000 for Social Accountability

SA8000 is an auditable certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain, and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace. It was developed in 1997 by Social Accountability International (SAI), formerly the Council on Economic Priorities, by an advisory board consisting of trade unions, NGOs, civil society organizations and companies. The SA8000 streamlines the complexities of navigating industry and corporate codes to create a common language and standard for measuring social compliance. As it can be applied worldwide to any organisation in any industry, it is an extremely useful tool in measuring, comparing, and verifying social accountability in the workplace.

SA8000 certification is a management systems standard, modelled on ISO standards. The management systems criteria require that facilities seeking to gain and maintain certification must go beyond simple compliance to the standard, but also integrate it into their management systems and practices and demonstrate ongoing conformance with the standard. SA8000 is based on the principles of international human rights norms as described in International Labour Organisation conventions, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It measures the performance of companies in nine areas important to social accountability in the workplace:

  • Child Labour
  • Forced and Compulsory Labour
  • Health and Safety
  • Freedom of Association & Right to Collective Bargaining
  • Discrimination
  • Disciplinary Practices
  • Working Hours
  • Remuneration
  • Management System

ISO ISO 22000 FSMS for Food & Beverage Industry

ISO 22000 FSMS International Standard specifies the requirements for a food safety management system that combines the following generally recognized key elements to ensure food safety along the food chain, up to the point of final consumption:

  • Interactive communication;
  • System management;
  • Prerequisite programmes;
  • HACCP principles.

ISO 22000 FSMS International Standard integrates the principles of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) system and application steps developed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. By means of auditable requirements, it combines the HACCP plan with prerequisite programmes (PRPs). Hazard analysis is the key to an effective food safety management system, since conducting a hazard analysis assists in organizing the knowledge required to establish an effective combination of control measures.

ISO 22000 FSMS International Standard requires that all hazards that may be reasonably expected to occur in the food chain, including hazards that may be associated with the type of process and facilities used, are identified and assessed. Thus ISO 22000 FSMS provides the means to determine and document why certain identified hazards need to be controlled by a particular organization and why others need not.

ISO 28000 TQVISION ISO 28000 Security Management Systems for the Supply Chain and C-TPAT

ISO 28000 International Standard has been developed in response to demand from industry for a security management standard. Its ultimate objective is to improve the security of supply chains. ISO 28000 International Standard enables an organization to establish an overall supply chain security management system.

ISO 28000 International Standard requires the organization to assess the security environment in which it operates and to determine if adequate security measures are in place and if other regulatory requirements already exist with which the organization complies. If security needs are identified by this process, the organization should implement mechanisms and processes to meet these needs. ISO 28000 International Standard is intended to apply in cases where an organization’s supply chains are required to be managed in a secure manner.

ISO 28000 International Standard specifies the requirements for a security management system, including those aspects critical to security assurance of the supply chain. These aspects include, but are not limited to, financing, manufacturing, information management and the facilities for packing, storing and transferring goods between modes of transport and locations. Security management is linked to many other aspects of business management. These other aspects should be considered directly, where and when they have an impact on security management, including transporting these goods along the supply chain.

C-TPAT (Customs–Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) is a voluntary supply-chain security program led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) focused on improving the security of private companies' supply chains with respect to terrorism. It recognizes that CBP can provide the highest level of cargo security only through close cooperation with the principle stakeholders of the international supply chain such as importers, carriers, consolidators, licensed customs brokers, and manufacturers. C-TPAT members are considered to be of low risk, and are therefore less likely to be examined at a U.S. port of entry.

Information Security Management System (ISMS) - ISO/IEC 27001

Organisations are seeking to demonstrate to their stakeholders, business partners and customers some form of 'fit for purpose' assurance regarding their information security.

A small gap in an information security management system may have dramatic consequences. Organisations need to define and maintain controls to avoid risk of leakage or destruction of confidential information.

ISO/IEC 27001 gives information on measures, on what effects they have and how to implement them. The standard defines the desired best practice methods for controlling (Protecting) information - Confidentiality, Integrity & Availability.

Once you start using ISO/IEC 27001 as a basis for your ISMS, your management system can be audited and registered by a third party (Certification Body).

WHO - GMP

WHO defines Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as “that part of quality assurance which ensures that products are consistently produced and controlled to the quality standards appropriate to their intended use and as required by the marketing authorization.”

GMP covers all aspects of the manufacturing process: defined manufacturing process; validated critical manufacturing steps; suitable premises, storage, transport; qualified and trained production and quality control personnel; adequate laboratory facilities; approved written procedures and instructions; records to show all steps of defined procedures have been taken; full traceability of a product through batch records and distribution records; and systems for recall and investigation of complaints.

The guiding principle of GMP is that quality is built in to a product, and not just tested in to a product. Therefore, the assurance is that the product not only meets the final specifications, but that it has been made by the same procedures under the same conditions each and every time it is made. There are many ways this is controlled - validation is that part of GMP that ensures that facility systems, equipment, processes, and tests procedures are in control and therefore consistently produce quality product.
