ISO has developed a new standard, ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management systems - Requirements, that will help organizations reduce the burden of occupational injuries and diseases, both for employers and the wider economy, resulting in losses from early retirements, staff absence and rising insurance premiums by providing a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions, all over the world.
ISO 45001 is applicable to all organizations, regardless of size,
industry or nature of business. It is designed to be integrated into
an organization’s existing management processes and follows
the same high-level structure as other ISO management system
standards, such as ISO 9001 QMS and ISO 14001
EMS.
ISO 45001 enables organizations
to put in place an occupational
health and safety (OH&S) management system. This will help
them manage their OH&S risks
and improve their OH&S performance by developing and
implementing effective policies
and objectives.
ISO 45001:2018 replaces OHSAS 18001. As per the transition plan, OHSAS 18001 certified organisations have three years to migrate to the new standard ISO 45001:2018.

ISO 14001:2026 standard
released The much awaited revision of International Standard for Environment Management System (EMS) was published on 15-April-2026. It replaces the previous 2015 version, refining the existing framework to address modern environmental challenges such as climate resilience, biodiversity loss, and sustainable resource use. ISO 14001:2026 provides organizations with a framework to protect the environment and respond to changing environmental conditions in balance with socio-economic needs. It specifies requirements that enable an organization to achieve the intended outcomes it sets for its environmental management system.
With the publication of ISO 14001:2026, the official status of ISO 14001:2015 will be considered as being “Withdrawn” taking account the expected three-year migration period for the organisations to migrate to ISO 14001:2026.

ISO 9000 Certification Pay?
Extract
from ISO Management Systems
The
study analyse the financial performance data of ISO
9000 QMS certified companies in three US business sectors
over a 10-year period (1988-1997) against that of control
groups of non-certified firms in the same sectors which
had a comparable business performance prior to the launching
of ISO 9000 QMS programmes by the first groups. Did
ISO 9000 QMS make a positive difference to financial
performance ?
They
find that certification does appear to lead to improved
financial performance, measured by... return on assets
(ROA).
Firms
that failed to seek ISO 9001 QMS certification experienced
substantial deteriorations in ROA, productivity, and
sales, while firms that did seek certification generally
managed to avoid such declines.
The
study results suggest that failing to seek ISO 9001
QMS certification contributes to gradually worsening
performance.
After
deciding to seek their first ISO 9000 QMS certification,
firms have made changes that, directly or indirectly,
led to relative improvements in ROA, both through superior
cost control and higher sales. |
